The Funkbrella is a professional dance company dedicated to serving youth and young adults in the performing arts. We work to provide high quality dance training, present innovative artistic works, and cultivate a diverse community of leaders.
Our goals are to:
1) Increase the number of professionally trained hip-hop dancers in the Bay Area
2) Empower young dancers by building leadership skills through dance
3) Create a strong sense of community and support for historically under-represented individuals, especially LGBT youth and minorities
The Funkbrella Dance Company is a 501(c)(3) non-profit performing arts organization that provides professional hip-hop dance training and performance opportunities for youth and young adults. The Funkbrella is composed of five individual performance companies that provide services to different demographics:
- Funkanometry SF (professional company)
- Project EM (all-male performance company)
- De La Femme (all-female performance company)
- The Odds (collegiate competitive team)
- Funksters (youth training company)
In addition to our performance companies, the Funkbrella holds an annual Summer Intensive for youth, a seasonal Performance Workshop for adults, and weekly classes open to the public. The programs of the Funkbrella seek to build leadership skills within young dancers, while also creating a supportive community of peers for people of all ages to share their passion for dance. Dedicated to enriching the lives of youth and young adults, the Funkbrella is more than just a company – it’s a community of dancers.
